GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) has the responsibility of providing quality care in compliance with the Physical Therapist (PT) plan of care, clinic policies, and guidelines from the American Physical Therapy Association and the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners. Specific duties include: preparing patients, treatment areas, and equipment; implementing treatment programs that include therapeutic exercises, gait training; ADL training techniques; administration of therapeutic heat and cold; administration of ultrasound; administration of therapeutic electric current and iontophoresis; application of traction; performance of intermittent venous compression; supervision of kinetic activities; application of external bandages, dressings, and support; performance of goniometric measurements.

Work Hours:

WORK HOURS: The normal Physical Therapy Clinic work week hours are 15-34 hrs/wk for part-time (as scheduled), and 35-40 hrs/wk for full-time positions (as scheduled). Occasional overtime or variations may be authorized or required.

Education & Training:

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
•Graduate from an approved school for Physical Therapist Assistants
•Licensed to practice in the State of Texas
•Two-year experience preferred but new graduates considered
•Must maintain current First Aid/CPR certification

Background Requirements:

BACKGROUND REQUIRMENTS: A valid state driver’s license, personal vehicle, vehicle insurance and a good driving record are required. Position requires travel and is authorized for mileage reimbursement

•Excellent communication skills (spelling, grammar, verbal, and written)
•Ability to work well with others
•Ability to read, speak and write English but Bilingual (English/Spanish) is desirable

•Basic knowledge of electronic medical records and Microsoft programs
•A working knowledge of managed care, co-payments and deductibles

Essential Job Functions & Duties:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
1.Provide physical therapy services as specified in the plan of care developed by the PT
2.Respond to acute changes in the patient’s physiological state
3.Teach other health care providers, patients and families to perform selected treatment procedures and functional activities
4.Interact with patients and families in a manner which provides the desired psycho-social support
5.Demonstrate appropriate and effective written, oral and nonverbal communication with patients, their families, colleagues and the public
6.Recognize own strengths and limitations and interpret for others their scope and function
7.Demonstrate safe, ethical and legal practice
8.Understand basic concepts related to the health care system including multidisciplinary team approach, quality care, governmental agencies, private sector, role of other health care providers, health care facilities, issues and problems
9.Understand basic principles of levels of authority and responsibility, planning, time management, supervisory process, performance evaluations, policies, and procedures, and fiscal consideration
10.The PTA may not specify and/or perform definitive (decisive, conclusive, final) evaluative and assessment procedures; alter a plan of care or goals; recommend wheelchairs, orthoses, prostheses, other assistive devices; or sign progress notes which include assessments used to design or modify patient care
11.Record patients progress in the chart, notifying the PT of any discrepancies and/or changes in the patient’s condition
12.Monitor patient schedules to ensure proper treatment frequency and maximize staff efficiency
13.Assists in scheduling the patient for their initial or follow-up appointments
14.Assess the supply and equipment needs and assist in ordering of these items
15.Attend and participate in all staff meetings and required educational programs
16.Read and abide by clinic and company policy and procedure guides and demonstrates awareness of new policies and procedures
17.Monitor PTR-As in performance of their clinical duties
18.Monitor patient scheduling and insure compliance with department policies
19.Assist in attempts to minimize patient no-show rate and delay in performing initial evaluations
20.Ensure HIPPA compliance
21.Minimize non-payment for services by verifying treatment authorization and properly completing clinical and billing records
22.Must be punctual and reliable in attendance

Working Conditions & Risks:

WORKING CONDITIONS AND RISKS: Work is indoors in a well-lighted and seasonally heated and cooled clinic. Job hazards are estimated to be minimal (low risk). Potential risk exists from accidents while using routine office equipment or from exposure to blood or other potentially infectious bodily fluids. The PTA is expected to be safety conscious all times.

Physical Requirements:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position requires prolonged standing, walking and sitting, and the use of hands and fingers. Repetitive motions consist of extended periods of upper limb movements (arms, hands, wrists); good vision (correctable); good hearing; and clear speech required.
•Ability to travel from clinic to clinic on a daily basis
•Ambulatory without assistive orthopedic devices
•Able to lift 20 pounds to height of 36 inches unassisted
•Stand unsupported for the majority of the daily work period
•Ability to demonstrate therapeutic exercises and kinetic activities involving the trunk and all extremities
•Able to squat to lift items from floor
•Must be able to reach horizontally to transfer papers to/from patient
•Must be able to speak and hear clearly enough for listener to understand from a 5 foot distance
•Must be able to observe patients actions and visually supervise therapeutic exercise and kinetic activities
