The Physical Therapist (PT) evaluates, examines, and utilizes exercises, rehabilitative procedures, soft tissue massage, mobilization, manipulations, and physical agents including, but not limited to mechanical devices, heat, cold, air, light, water, electricity, and sound in the diagnosis or treatment of patients. The PT has the responsibility of providing quality care in compliance with guidelines from the American Physical Therapy Association and the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners.  Specific duties include but are not limited to: evaluation of the patient and determination of appropriate therapies, progression of the treatment as the patient’s condition permits, documentation of care provided, supervision of Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA), Physical Therapy Receptionist/Aide (PTR-A), and participation in the quality assurance program. Modalities include but are not limited to the use of: therapeutic exercises, kinetic activities, gait training, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), traction, application of topical medication to open wounds, sharp debridement, provision of soft goods, inhibitive casting and splinting, phonophoresis, iontophoresis, and biofeedback systems.

Work Hours:

The normal Physical Therapy Clinic work week hours are 15-34 hours/week for part-time (as scheduled), and 35-40 hours/week for full-time positions (as scheduled).  Occasional or variations may be authorized or required.

Education & Training:

  • Graduate of a physical therapy program accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Texas
  • Two years of experience preferred but new graduates considered  
  • Must maintain current First Aid/CPR certification

Background Requirements:

A personal vehicle, valid state driver’s license, vehicle insurance and a good driving record are required.  Position requires travel and is authorized for mileage reimbursement.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Physical evaluation skills, knowledge of injury and disease progression and the ability to alter treatment programs to increase and maximize the patient’s functional abilities
  • Excellent written communication skills (spelling, grammar, verbal, and written)
  • Ability to work well with others and motivate subordinates to optimize their efficiency and effectiveness in patient care and administrative tasks
  • Ability to read, speak and write English but Bilingual (English/Spanish) is desirable
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is desirable
  • Ability to demonstrate positive participation and dependability
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of workers compensation fees and treatment guidelines
  • Basic knowledge of electronic medical records and Microsoft programs
  • A working knowledge of managed care, co-payments and deductibles

Essential Job Functions & Duties:

  1. Evaluate and establish goals/treatment plan for each new patient
  2. Provides effective progress notes to referring physicians
  3. Provide direct physical therapy treatment
  4. Maintain timely and appropriate documentation of patient visits
  5. Designate physical therapy care to PTA or PTR-A as appropriate to his/her level of skill
  6. Monitors patient schedules to ensure proper treatment frequency and maximize staff efficiency
  7. Review daily chart notes, re-evaluate patient and alter program as necessary for those patients who have been designated to the care of the PT
  8. Direct and supervise one or more PTA and/or PTR-A
  9. Consult with referring physicians
  10. Teach other health care providers, patients and families to perform selected treatment procedures and functional activities
  11. Interact with patients and families in a manner which provides the desired psychosocial support
  12. Demonstrate appropriate and effective written, oral and nonverbal communication with patients and their families, colleagues and the public
  13. Recognize own strengths and limitations and interpret for others their scope and function
  14. Demonstrate safe, ethical and legal practice
  15. Understand basic concepts related to the health care system including multidisciplinary team approach, quality care, governmental agencies, private sector, role of other health care providers, health care facilities, issues and problems
  16. Understand basic principles of levels of authority and responsibility, planning time management, supervisory process, performance evaluations, policies and procedures, and fiscal consideration
  17. Record patient’s progress in the electronic medical record altering patient treatment as necessary to be consistent with changes in the patient’s condition
  18. Ensure patient scheduling is performed in a manner which maximizes treatment effectiveness and optimizes staff efficiency
  19. Assess the supply and equipment needs and assist in ordering these items
  20. Attend and participate in all staff meetings and required educational programs
  21. Read and abides by clinic and company policy and procedure guides and demonstrates awareness of new policies and procedures
  22. Provide work site assessment as required
  23. Assist in the marketing of physical therapy services to internal and external clients
  24. Assist in orienting new employees and providing in-service training to physical therapy and other clinic staff members
  25. Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of the quality and appropriateness of patient care and takes necessary actions based on the findings
  26. Verify all billing records are completed accurately and in a timely manner
  27. Ensure HIPPA compliance
  28. Assist other staff members in actions to minimize patient no shows and delay in initiating physical therapy treatment
  29. Minimize non-payment for services by verifying treatment authorization and properly completing clinical and billing records
  30. Must be punctual and reliable in attendance

  5. Interacts with other departments in a manner that promotes teamwork and facilitates company goals

Working Conditions & Risks:

Work is indoors in a well lighted and seasonally heated and cooled clinic.  Job hazards are estimated to be minimal (low risk). Potential risk exists from accidents while using routine office equipment or from exposure to blood or other potentially infectious bodily fluids.  The PT is expected to be safety conscious at all times.

Physical Requirements:

Position requires prolonged standing, walking and sitting, and the use of hands and fingers.  Repetitive motions consist of extended periods of upper limb movements (arms, hands, wrists); good vision; good hearing, and clear speech are required.

  • Ambulatory without assistive orthopedic devices
  • Able to lift 20 pounds to a height of 36 inches unassisted
  • Stand unsupported for the majority of the daily work period
  • Ability to demonstrate therapeutic exercises and kinetic activities involving the trunk and all extremities
  • Able to squat to lift items from floor
  • Must be able to reach horizontally to transfer papers to/from patient
  • Must be able to speak and hear clearly enough for listener to understand from a 5 foot distance
  • Must be able to observe patients actions and visually supervise therapeutic exercise and kinetic activities
